A man is dead in a phone booth.
The only thing in there with him is his fishing gear.
How did he die?

was there any cords/fishing lines around his neck? does the place the phone booth is located matter? IE near the water. Had he just finished fishing or was he on his way there?

There was nothing around his neck, the location fo the phone booth does not matter, and he was finished fishing :)

he might have caught something...I'm not sure actually. The time of day does not matter and no he wasn't locked in :)
Does the fishing gear have anything to do with his death or was it incidental? I'm gonna say that he was shot in the head. Just a guess.
no shot in the head, and the fishing gear does play a very important role in this riddle, although not necessarily in his death specifically. (ie. You would not be able to figure out this riddle without the fishing gear but he was not killed by the fishing gear.)

Well, here's what happened. He was fishing in the spring on a warm sunny day in a secluded area of the Rockies. When he went to leave his spot, he didn't realize the the snow had melted into the stream he crossed, causing the fording height of the water to double. He tried to drive his Jeep through anyway, which resulted in water in his distributor and air intake: hydro-lock. Being a professional fisherman and having very expensive equipment, he decided to take it with him when he hitchhiked. A kind man picked him up and drove him into the closest town, but couldn't wait, so the man take all of his gear and went to call AAA. He made the call and AAA said they'd come pick him up AND tow his Jeep out, since it was close to an accessible road. The man thought that this was great news and hung up the phone. Then a venomous snake that was hiding in the ceiling of the phone booth bit the man on the neck, sending its venom into the man's jugular, killing him nearly instantly.

Joel - yes, the questions have to be yes or no. No, the man did not die of a snake bite. Good try though. A little less specific might be better.
I sorry, Rebecca, but I'm following this riddle blog mainly for the Joel comments. The only one I got was the first one, and the answer just came instantly. The last two are too involved for my feeble brain. Joel's brain (and thus his guesses) is warped and very entertaining! I miss you!

haha, well he does come up with some interesting scenarios! These story riddles definitely take a little more work because the answer's not in the riddle but they usually make me laugh when I finally get the answer...which is why they're fun to share :)
Upon rereading the riddle, I'm ready to submit my second guess.
The man invented a method teleportation in the early 1990s. Due to the high volume of phone booths throughout the world, he decided that using them would be the best medium to ensure that the landing platform was always the same. Of course, the one glitch that he encountered when trying to transport from his home-base machine was that it wouldn't teleport anything outside of his person; it could only teleport one object. Since showing up nude wasn't ideal, he decided to build a few more teleportation devices, planning to simultaneously teleport his personal items to the same location as himself. When testing the machine, he just grabbed what he had close by, which happened to be his tackle box, left over from the weekend. Unfortunately, the man overlooked the fundamental principle that two objects cannot occupy the same space. The simultaneous teleportation was a success, however the teleported object particles became entwined, leading to an unsuccessful reconstruction and ultimately the man's death. Thus the dead man was naked and alone with only his fishing gear in the phone booth.
Oh, and the phone had been taken out for repairs.

That was disturbing. I'm not sure I even understand what you just said. But no, he did not die from teleportation and he had all his clothes on.

sorry, your right. I guess I shouldn't assume that he had clothes on. Maybe he was naked! Maybe he even teleported! but the phone was in there and functional and he did not die from anything relating to teleportation.
oh, and in response to a couple other posts: he was not murdered.

Once there was a man who lived in a lakeside town and enjoyed fishing. He was retired and walked the 1/2 mile to his boat everyday, carrying his fishing gear. As the man was walking on this particular day, he started having a heartattack, indicated by the pain in his left arm. He was able to make it a few steps into the nearby phonebooth to call 911, but slipped on the greasy floor and smashed his head against the wall, killing him.

The man was fishing can calling his wife to tell her that he was done so that she could come pick him up (they only had one car). Unfortunately, as he tried to close the phone booth door, his tackle box slipped, opened and fell against him, wedging between him and the door. This resulted in a hundred barbed lures and hooks going into his skin and piercing a few major arteries, causing him to bleed out.

well, that was closer, but remember the fishing gear wasn't involved in his death, it's just a contextual clue.
Did he have fake fish as lures? Maybe a bear saw it and was hungry and decided to have a little snack.

The man was in the phone booth for some reason related to fishing and accidentally slammed the metal edge of the door into is femoral artery, causing him to bleed out. Fortunately he was able to use the fishing line to create a tourniquet. Then the rope broke and a piano fell from the 12th floor and crushed him.

Alicia - he wasn't killed by anything (or anyone) outside the phone booth...good thought though!
Joel - you were close with the bleeding, but although the phone booth was broken it didn't have to do with the door or a piano.
did he get his fishing pole stuck in his neck and bleed to death, that's a pretty picture, and yes I do have skype now
Remember, the fishing gear is just a context clue it did NOT play a part in his death. But your right on the money with the bleeding to death :)

He put something he had been holding in his mouth, a fishing lure perhaps, to have both hands free to fumble in his pockets for change to make a call. He choked on it.
His hands were wet and the phone electrocuted him.

Joel - no, the only reason he didn't leave is because he was bleeding to death.
Kendra - very close. Not exactly something INSIDE the booth...more like the booth itself

closer Kendra, closer...but remember that the fishing gear has SOMETHING to do with it...and it wasn't the DOOR he cut himself on.

He didn't trip over the fishing gear or impale himself on it, it's there just as a context clue to let you know that he just went fishing...that's a crucial detail.

He was real mad about not catching any fish and punched through the glass.

His feet were wet so he slipped and put his hand out to save himself. His hand went through the glass, cutting his wrist and he bled to death.
so he bled to death because of glass, did he kick it, because he didn't catch anything? or punch it...did he do something out of anger that caused his death?
Oh you are all so extremely close! He DID cut his hands by breaking the glass...but it was because he DID catch a fish, not because he couldn't catch any.

He was holding the fish in his hands when it squirmed loose. He went to catch it and CRASH - hands through the glass!

PS You also told us that you didn't KNOW if he caught a fish or not, but now he dies BECAUSE he caught a fish. Even though I'm pretty sure there's not foul play here, I'm still holding you for further questioning.

Well, the fish wasn't in the booth with him and technically it doesn't matter whether he ACTUALLY caught the fish...it could have been the one that got away. I just said that it was BECAUSE he caught the fish to help you out.
And yes, he did die by breaking the glass with his hands and bleeding out...but the fun part of the riddle is WHY/HOW did he break the glass?
the fish was outside of the booth so he went to grab it and boom crash glass and all? oh and thank you so much for the scarf I love it! I totally forgot about it :),

No, he wasn't grabbing for the fish, and he wasn't angry, he was more excited. So excited that he called someone to tell them about it. He was actually on the phone when he died.

He was jumping up and down in excitement over having caught a fish, his wet feet slipped and his hand went through the glass.
He didn't slip and his hands went through the sides of the booth, not the top. You're getting SO close!

Yeah, you're only missing the part that ties into the fishing. The key is: What was he SAYING when he broke the glass?? (both hands, through opposite sides of the glass...)
I know I know it came to me!!! he was saying how big the fish he caught was!!!!
YES!! He was on the phone, saying "it was THIS big!"
